DNA Tells Students They Aren't Who They Thought

Please respond to each of the following questions in separate posts of 4-6 sentences each.  Then respond to two of your peers' comments, for a total of five comments overall.

I'd like you to consider the following:
  1. What do you think it means when Ms. Best says, "Maybe we haven't progressed as much as we thought we had." Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
  2. Pick one quote from the article and analyze it. Explain what the is author saying and what their statement says about their attitude toward race.
  3. Do you think this type of study encourages us to becomes more unified or does it encourage us to look for differences? Explain.

  1. 1. I totally agree with this. We as a society say that we don't judge, but in reality we do. If we meet someone who is biracial being white and black and they look more black then white we judge. Instead of thinking they are mixed we go ahead and say that we consider them to be black instead of white. Basically meaning that our society really hasn't changed!

  2. 1. Ms. Bets feels like we are not as tolerant as we all believe we are. As I was reading the article I was thinking the same thing, even though the modern world is supposedly more free in terms of expression, we don’t usually say out loud our opinion about a determinate racial group; we don’t want to sound racist, and sometimes we are afraid to speak with someone of another ethnicity group because we don’t want to say something that may offends them. Ms Bent ask herself if we are better than our grandpas which talk without fear against other races, no matter who they are.

  3. 1-I believe Ms.Best was refering to the fact that we believe racism is over. But in reality it still exist people juge others by the color of their skin. They also treat them differently. So in reality we haven't really made that much progress from then to now. The difference now is that we respect each others rights to some extent and most people try to hide the fact that they're racis.

  4. 2. Mr. Harrison, who saids "Just because I found out I'm white, I'm not going to act white,". He said "I'm very proud of my black side."

This tells me about Mr. Harrison that just because he found out he is white he coinsiders himself black all the way. Also it can say about the issuses he had growing-up that he doesnt coinsider himself white just black. He was raised believing himslef to b fully African American nad thats it.

  5. 1) What can be inferred from the text were Ms. Best says that maybe we haven’t progressed as much as we thought we had its like the rabbit and the turtle that for being so confident he thought that he would win making the turtle the slowest to get there and the first one. It’s like god’s saying some of the last will be first and sum of the first will be last. As easy as it sounds we haven’t changed a little from the last segregation we have managed to hide it and be in hibernation so that nobody can see it. They have done a great job on hiding it from us we have not seen it but they know when to strike we you least expect it. So I can tell you that we as sons from immigrants can see we had it a little better than the African Americans that were slaves for many years and suffered brutality from their boss. We today can say that I agree we haven’t changed one single bit it’s like putting make up were you don’t want others to see their dirt that there is they try to put a thumb on the sun and try to do everything in one day when not even the world was done in one day.

  6. 1.i agree with the comment, because we all say we dont judge the skin color of the person but deep down we all do it shouldn't matter what skin color they are its how the person is and how they act and present themself, that's how we should judge and be judged in life.

  7. 2- "That's this generation". Why is it that we had to wait for this generation to come along to ask ourselves all these questions. Why not before? I believe everyone has always wonder where they came from? what are their orgins? but sometimes were to afraid of the out come to even take a chance to ask questions and actually find out.

  8. 3. I think this study encouraages us to be more unified because its goes to shows us that we aren't so different after all. Someone who thought their whole lives that they we one race could find out that they're from another. It can help people put some differences aside and look at each other with different eyes. This study can possibly bring communites together in a sense and maybe help our society.

    ReplyDelete
  9. 3-I believe it encourages us to do both. To become more unified and also encourage us to look for differences. Sometimes by comparing different nationalities we learn about similarities that we have and also differences. That we might like or dislike.

  10. 1. I think that what Ms. Best means is that in today's society there is still a great amount of racism. We are supposed to be of a more open mind and advanced in our way of thinking. It clearly shows in her comments that this is not the case. You should not judge someone by their look. She asks valid questions on why is this so important to know. If we have not supassed this yet it is possible that we may never change.

  11. i think this study encourages us to be unified just because people will see that we all deep down are the same we all have background and genetic ancestry from different race and it can help the society come closer together.

  12. 2. “About half of the 100 students tested this semester were white, he said, “And every one of them said ‘Oh man, I hope I’m part black,’ because it would upset their parents.””.

In this text, white students wanted to be part black to upset their parents; so, they believe their parents will find it incredible offensive to be related to the African race. I can’t tell if this is the same in all places, but in my case I don’t think my parents would be offended by something like this; maybe that’s because Hispanics are already a mixture, and it shouldn’t be surprising for anybody. However, those kids parents could feel exclude it to that because the way they lived, they believe to be 100% European descendents and would feel stripped of what they think is their personality.

  13. I agree with what Jvaccaro said to some extent. We like to believe that's what will happen. In reality most people now days look for the negative instead of the positive. They choose to live in dinal or plain ignorance. A perfect example of this is Mr.Harrison.

  14. 1. In the article, Ms.Best says Maybe 'We haven't progressed as much as we thought we had.". To me this means that in this time where everyone is suppose to get along and not be racist, we still are which is one of the reasons why maybe we wanna figure out where we really are from. I agree with it because nowadays we see it how certain people act towards certain races. They may not say anything but you can tell how they act or the way they make look at one another.

2."Just because I found out i'm white, Im not going to act white," Mr.Harrison said, "im very proud of my black side." He is saying here is that just because he found out that he is part white, doesnt mean that he is goin to start acting like a white person. He is just gonna continue how he noramlly is and not really let that he is also white affect him.It also goes to show that he doesnt really care about his white side. He just wanted to find out where else he is geneticly from and thats it.

3.This kind of study should encourage us to be unified because it goes to show that we are all the same in some way. There is no need to be treated differently or think where your from that is better than anybody else. People would be able to realize more that no matter where your from, we are all living in a same place, drink the same water and share the same sun.

  15. 2) The quote that I choose was the one where it says that “everyone wants to take the test, even
students who think they are 100 percent one race or another” ‘’It’s a badge in this multicultural world”.
What I can perceive from the quote is that more and more children and maybe some adults are starting to realize that as they get older they start to find themselves around many cultures and try to mix up with them by putting on jeopardy from what race they might be rather than being proud from where they came from. It’s a lively situation that many people face it’s like saying or stating the sexuality that you may be and putting to the test the knowledge of the world and why would you want to know what race you are it won’t change you already grew up in the race you might be why change it. Why be different for some simple test that may sometimes prove to be the wrong step that you have taken. Their attitude as a student that I am I can relate to it has come to my attention that children this day are worrying too much for what culture or what or were they came from most of them considered themselves Americans when you can say that they come from ancestor of Hispanic decent. So the author is just referring and stating that people today worry too much on the race they are rather than worrying on their studies and life then what race their yeah it’s good to know but why would it be that great to know you probably already lived a life leaving a religion or race that you might be then why choose to know more and question your origins. They to say that race is not that important is what important is that you value your self as a person and that value were you came from stop questioning you race and concentrate on what is important.

  16. 2. "But whatever his genes say, or those of Ms. Best, they will most likely be seen as black - at least by white Americans - for the rest of their lives."

This statement to me says that even though Mr. Harrison and Ms. Best did the DNA test and found that they are mixed with other cultures they will only be viewed as blacks by white amerians. It doesn't matter where they are from. In what I believe that Dr. Richards views are is that this is still a black and white issue. Racism is still the same as it used to be so many years ago, there has been no advancement.

  17. 3. Well, I couldn’t say it motivates one intention or another. Yes, it proves even to the more skeptics that we are not that different than other races, that we all are somehow related. In that means we could say that it help us understand each other. In the other hand, the study itself show an interest in finding how much we are of what we believe we are, and one can’t help but feel disappointed when we discover we are not what we always though we were.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1.I agree with MS. Best statement because everyone said s that it doesn’t matter if we’re black or white but as soon as there’s a dark skinned boy with a white woman everyone turns around and said’s wow that’s a weird couple. Although everyone is living in a society where it doesn’t matter what your skin color is or what nationality you are people still judge others for their appearance. What makes me agree more with her is that even though discrimination ended long years ago us as a nation and community still tend to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1.I strongly agree with what Mr. Best said that “maybe we haven’t progress as much as we thought we had” because we are living in a new century where racism was left behind as well as many other things and we have “progressed”, but the reality is that the majority of people still judge others whether is on skin color, race, religion etc. We are supposed to have overcome this and we say we have but that’s not the reality because there are still many ignorant people who are very racist and judgmental.
2.“oh man I hope I’m part black because it would upset my parents” this shows a lot about many peoples attitude about race because if person is hoping for a hint of black in them to upset their parents that shows how racist their parents may be that it would even upset them. And is just so sad to see that some people find upsetting to find out they race background instead of embracing it and wanting to learn more about it
3.I believe that a study like this should encourage people to become more unified and open minded about different races. However there will be people who don’t see it that way and prefer to be more judgmental and look for differences among eachother

    ReplyDelete
  20. 3. This study encourages more for us to look at differences than similarities. Dr. Richards is trying to prove that with this test people will look differently at others. It does not seem that the end result will be favorable. I think that it will only broaden racism for it gives you another tool to discriminate against someone. It also creates some confusion.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree 100% percent with Y.Thalman. We are suppose to be more oppened minded but were not. Especially our grandparents and great grand parents. At least my grandmother is she says "that if I get involved with a dark skin man she would disown me". I tell her I'm going to marry one she gets really upset at this idea. I'm going to sound a little like a crazy romantic by this is how I truly feel. I believe you should follow your heart to who ever it leads you without caring if his white or black or purple. You should be willing to put this stupid little issues behind you and live your life freely with who you want without being juge by anyone.

  22. 1. " Maybe we haven't progressed as much as we thought we had."
-> I agree with Mr.Best, I do think we haven't progressed as much as we thought we had. I think people don't understand that what really matter is someone's character. Racism is an old social problem that we can still resolve. Racism will only end when people realize that we are equal and we have the same rights and duties.

  23. 3) Well with this statement I am neutral I won’t agree or disagree with this cause not just for reading this will make me change my mind of wonder for my origins or anything for that matter but nor would it change for good like no I won’t do it cause I read it and don’t want to follow others not like that either I like to be myself have my own suggestions and my own doubts. So I wonder on seeing and reading and try to find something to search about I won’t do that I just like to question myself not look at somebody else work to know what I can do. I have my own personality I don’t want to copy somebody. So like I said I want to be a self centered person and don’t want to be distracted by others question about life and other things I like to have my own doubts and more.

  24. What do you think it means when Ms. Best says, "Maybe we haven't progressed as much as we thought we had." Do you agree or disagree? Explain.

What Ms. Best is trying to say is that racism is still around very much today. She asked “why do people, especially in this country, want to know?” That is because race plays a big part of today’s generation. Everyone wants to belong to something. I believe we like to think that we are accepting of all races but indeed we are not. We may have come a long way when it comes to prejudice but there are many steps to take before it is completely gone.

  25. 2) Pick one quote from the article and analyze it. Explain what the is author saying and what their statement says about their attitude toward race.
“Everyone wants to take the test, even students who think they are 100 percent one race or another, and almost every one of them wants to discover something, that they're 1 percent Asian or something. It's a badge in this multicultural world," he said.
This quote is from Mr. Richards the Sociology teacher. What he is trying to say is very true. It seems that now a day’s everyone hopes to be multiracial. It is almost an honor of some sort to be able to say you are. Years ago it may have been looked down on to say you were mixed but times are changing greatly.
Mr. Richards’ test showed he was also from mixed races but he is sticking to his black side because he is very proud to be black. I think he has the right attitude. Just because you discover you come from another race does not mean you have to forget who you are.

  26. 3) Do you think this type of study encourages us to become more unified or does it encourage us to look for differences? Explain.
I think it is encouraging us to look at our differences to actually unit us as a whole. Finding out these new results could help a lot. I personally would like to take the DNA test myself. Only because it would be interesting to find out what other cultures I may come from.

  27. 1. What do you think it means when Ms. Best says, “maybe we haven’t progress as much as we thought we had”. Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
What Ms. Best means by that is that people haven’t change the way they think about race. I agree, in this article explains that younger students’ and adults are into this new project that allows them to know what their race is. Even though many results were surprising many of this result actually had affects this people. The test had brought us the past because probably some people had this test just to know that they don’t belong in that race. People haven’t change the past still present between us because we still think that race is a priory problem in today’s society.
    2. Pick one quote from the article and analyze it. Explain what the author is saying and what their statement says about their attitude toward race.
I pick the one that Mr. Harrison says “I’m 48 percent white- genetically I am, at least, but not culturally. And the fact that I’m black is more important, because it’s something I know. It’s who I’m comfortable with”. This quotation means that Mr. Harrison was uncomfortable to know that he is 48 percent white. As far this situation continues Mr. Harrison won’t considerate himself white duo to his past experience. Probably Mr. Harrison was not treated like a white in his past who knows. But the fact that he was unpleased by that result makes me think that he was treated different then white people and now in present to know that he is white wasn’t the best news for him. He was race black and knows the black people history how they suffer and how they conquer their rights to be treated equal as other people. Therefore he decides to be black because that was the way he was race and that’s the culture that he knows. The attitude of Mr. Harrison was defensives towards the result that he was half white.
    3. Do you think this type of study encourages us to become more unified or does it encourage us to look for differences?
This type of study encourages us to look for differences. Thinking that you can have more than one race makes you take that test. You will see thinks differently after taking this test whether is bad or good. People will probably change their attitude towards people that are different than them. As this article state we still think that race is priory problem just like social status.
    4. Why did this kind of test was approve to be tested in this generation?
Did this people that make this kind of test thought in the possibility that it could make people see thinks in another way whether is bad or good. If they knew that this test can turn in a bad situation will they stop? I guest not because they want to prove how important is race to us. Probably this people were trying to get positive result towards race but it seems that not all of us think that race is not important. People that took this test got surprising results and their reaction was just amaze. Believe or not we still think that race is important and thanks to this test we can prove it.

    5. Why do people still think that race is important?
Is it important to us to think that we are different than others and that we should treat them differently? Indeed this is important for some people in today’s society. Even though we had a bad experience in the past by been racist, some of us haven’t change at all. I base my thoughts in the article because it says that Ms. Best had been discriminated on both sides. Ms. Best doesn’t have a dark skin or white skin therefore she feels she doesn’t belong in any race because of the discrimination by both race. How can we still discriminate people by their skin color didn’t we were proud to change the past or was just an imagination. At least not all of us think that race is priory problem.

  28. I disagree with what Dianela feels about Mr. Harrison. I don't think that he is in denial of being part white. I think that he was raised as a black man and learned the black culture. He is simply proud of who he is. Think about it. If he had not taken the DNA test which is how he found out he is part white he would have never known. You can't believe that he is in denial or ignorant to the fact of being white.. he just learned about his heritage according to his skin color and family back round.

  31. 2.) Pick one quote from the article and analyze it. Explain what the author's saying and what their statement says about their attitude towards race.

"Just because I found out I'm white, I'm not going to act white"

The author is explaining how Mr. Harrison felt when he took the DNA tests and he found out that he was white. Mr. Harrison felt like a proud black man that was not going to change his personality just because he has European in his blood. The author explained how Mr. Harrison got teased by his peers for being a little lighter than the others when he was a kid. This might have an effect on how he quoted on him finding out he was half white.

  32. 3.) Do you think this type of study encourages us to become more unified or does it encourage us to look for differences? Explain.

I think this type of study unites us in some ways. For example in this country it started by immigrants migrating from Europe. We all are mixed nationalities in this fine country. It would be hilarious if a raisin white man found to he was black threw a DNA test. I think we stand united, and I think the younger generation is not racist. It’s sad to say that there still is racism with the older generation like senior citizens. This article just encourages people to try a DNA test.

  33. 1.) What do you think it means when Ms. Best says, "maybe we haven't progressed as much as we had." Do you agree or disagree? Explain.
I believe what Ms. Best meant from that quote was that our country still has racist people. That others still want to know there hederiage of their ancestors. Ms. Best feels that we haven’t improved in the past centuries. How back in the days there was a lot of racism and she still feels like it hasn’t changed. I sincerely feel that she is completely wrong. I strongly disagree with her. I think we have improved from now to the 1900s. Our president is African American and is Muslim. Americans voted for him to be president. Maybe there still is racism down south, but up north is way different. There’s nothing wrong with knowing more information about ourselves.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1. I agree with Ms. Best when she says, "Maybe we haven't progressed as much as we thought we has." Instead of accepting people for who they are as a person, we are accepting them for their ethnic background which we shouldn't do. Ms. Best also says, "Why are we, as people, so caught up in race?" With so many others things going on, why are we limiting ourselves by worrying about other peoples race or backgrounds when we should be worrying about other things.

    2. Mr. Harrison, who says that as a child he molded himself to be more black, does not want this new imformation to change his identity. "Just because I'm white, I'm not going to act white," he said. "I'm very proud of my black side." His statement and views, according to what he says implies that he respects that he is half white but he will not change his way of being just because of this. He is who he is and being half of another race won't change this.

    3. I believe this study encourages us to look for differences because maybe most of us want to know a little more beyond our own backgrounds and discover what else is really there.

  35. 4) I disagree with negdo's comment on saying that its not that we will feel disappointed but, I can say that we are what we are and noting could change that not even some test made from a computer. It's like he says that we might find something or other religon that we have yet not know also that what we are but, I do agree when he say's that we don't judge other knowing that theri different and yet we to can be the same as them so it's not something that can be hidden or put to stake or to the test. So I would say I agree and disagree with some of his comment or suggestion.

  36. 5) I would say that I totally agree with lilian comment that althought we shouldn't be jugdeful we still can't stop that their is still people that judge or can be name as racist to country or religion. Also that we are or can say that we all are in day open minded but for some things that are our on way that we want it to work for us we are so un indfferent with other cultures that come to this country to look for a better life and we still have not overcome our own problem not even the United States has not fixed it's own problems and yet we expect that we are all accpeted and change every one has to change the way of thinking and seeing thing's.

  37. I think Ms.best means that people are not satisfied with just there color of their skin, they want to know who they really are by knowing their race, and where they come from! People what to know their ethnicity and they are not satisfied with just being black and white, and maybe finding out where they from, they would know more family history about them self.

  38. the quote that I like the most is "when I teach I try to demonstrate to students how complex race is and ethnicity" I like it because Dr. Richard is putting his all in teaching you and giving you the knowledge of your self and really get into the subject you you do understand the differences. He also said "my secondary goal is to improve race relationship", I think he was trying to say he was people to be closer and no look and judge be their color, that maybe people are closer them they really think they are.

  39. I think studies encourage us to become more unified and bring students closer and people in general can become more opened mind and have more interest in different thing.
